Get to know us

Paddle Michiana has been active since the early 2000's. The group was started and led by Bob Owens the "Curmudgeon". Paddlesports weren't as popular at that time, and the group was fairly small. Bob led river expeditions which came to be known as "Bob trips" AKA bushwhacking.

As interests changed and Bob began to slow down, Mark Spurrier stepped up. Under Mark's guidance, the group became larger, more active, and established a presence on Facebook. Current group administrators are Gary Konecny and Margaret Easton.

Our group has grown to close to 3,000 members on Facebook and it’s the largest regional paddling group in the state. Members range from some of the top tier athletes in the sport, to folks who continue the tradition of exploration that used to be "Bob trips" to those who are very happy to enjoy a slow, easy day on the river. There is such a huge range of skills, interest, gear and abilities that everyone can feel comfortable.  Boat snobs, cliques, and elitism is not allowed, we all learn from each other.

In recent years, paddlesports has become very popular. Because of this, our group has an added focus of safety and education. We have been fortunate to partner with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the IN DNR. These organizations have provided safety and education resources for our use.

Even though we have not personally met all 2,900 Facebook members, we provide an excellent source for information on local river conditions and mileage.

We are not a club, group, or organization. No liability is given, offered, or implied. Paddle Michiana advocates wearing a proper fitting PFD when on the water.

We invite you to join us on the water!
